East Haven Environmental Improvements

Overview

The coastline and Scotland’s seas have been improved by removal of a much greater volume of marine litter. Beneficiaries of the project have been; Wildlife, people who use the beach and coastal paths, tourism, the wider public in that there is less plastic at risk of entering the food chain. It has also helped Scotland to meet its’ obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive to achieve good environmental status in our marine waters by 2020.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?

The two Great Angus Beach Cleans have demonstrated a new approach to beach cleaning in Scotland and made a significant impact on the marine environment.

How has your project benefited your local area?

A minimum of 4.225 tonnes of marine litter has been removed from the coastline between
Carnoustie and Arbroath during a five-month period.

What has been your biggest challenge?

The volume of ghost fishing gear on the Angus coast is considerable and there is much work to be done to change behaviours within the industry. However, learning from the two Great Angus Beach Cleans has been shared with Marine Scotland who are developing a new strategy to reduce ghost fishing gear.
